Desert safety for pets: dunes, scorpions and surface temperature
The desert is one of the UAE's best-kept dog-walking secrets — and one of its most dangerous if you don't prepare.
When to go
October to March, early morning or after sunset. Surface temperature in summer dunes exceeds 70°C. Even on cool winter days, midday sand can burn pads.
What to bring
- 2× the water you think you need. A collapsible bowl.
- Booties for sensitive pads (try them on at home first).
- A tick comb — desert ticks are common.
- A first-aid kit with vet wrap, gauze, antiseptic.
- Snake bite emergency plan: nearest 24-hour vet, kept in your phone.
Scorpion and snake awareness
Don't let dogs sniff under rocks. If bitten/stung: do NOT cut, suck, or apply ice. Keep the dog calm, get to a vet immediately. UAE has saw-scaled vipers and Arabian death stalker scorpions in the wild — both are medically significant.
