Positive reinforcement: the only training method science actually supports

Published June 2026 ยท Filed in Training

"Alpha theory" โ€” the idea that dogs see your family as a pack you need to dominate โ€” is dead. The wolf researcher who originally coined the term spent 30 years trying to retract it. Modern peer-reviewed research is unanimous: positive reinforcement is the only training method that produces reliable, long-term behaviour change without side effects like fear or learned aggression.

What "positive reinforcement" actually means

The behaviour you want gets rewarded. The behaviour you don't want is ignored when safe, or redirected. You never use leash pops, alpha rolls, prong collars, e-collars or scolding. The four building blocks: a marker word ("yes" or a clicker), a reward your dog genuinely values, short sessions (5 minutes ร— 3 daily beats 1 ร— 30), and a release cue.

Teaching "sit" in five minutes

  1. Hold a treat slightly above your dog's nose.
  2. Move it slowly backwards toward their tail.
  3. Their head tilts up; their bum drops naturally.
  4. The instant their bum touches the floor, mark and treat.
  5. After 10 reps, add the word "sit" right as you start the motion.

When to hire a pro

For aggression, reactivity, severe separation anxiety, or resource guarding โ€” don't DIY. Look for "CPDT-KA", "KPA-CTP", or "IAABC" in their certifications. Avoid anyone advertising "balanced" training or "pack leadership" โ€” that's modern code for compulsion methods.
