From freelance dog walker to platform pro: what changes
Moving off Craigslist and word-of-mouth onto a real pet-services platform: what changes for your income, taxes, insurance, and client mix.
If you already walk dogs for cash, off word-of-mouth, and pass business cards at the park, moving onto a proper platform can feel like extra friction for no upside. It is the opposite. The friction is real for two weeks and pays off for years. Here is exactly what changes.
What stays the same
Your clients, your walks, your routes, your reputation. None of that resets.
You keep the trust you have built. You keep the dogs you know. What changes is the paperwork underneath.
What you gain in the first month
The first-month gains are unglamorous and load-bearing.
- Payment stops being your problem. On OnlyPaw, bookings settle in-app and clients cannot walk out on a payment. Payouts hit your account every Monday, $50 minimum, via bank transfer or PayPal. No more chasing a client for the £15 they still owe you from last Tuesday.
- Insurance is easier to defend. A verified platform profile plus a paid public liability policy is the paper trail insurers want. Cash-only freelance work is where claims get denied.
- Cancellations cost the client, not you. The platform enforces the policy you set. If your rule is 24-hour notice, the platform charges the fee automatically.
- You get discoverable. New clients search the platform on their phone in bed. A great profile with reviews from your existing clients puts you in front of them.
None of that requires you to change how you walk a single dog.
What changes for your income
The trade-off people worry about is the platform fee. On OnlyPaw the platform fee is a flat 5 percent, taken from the booking value. Compare that to what freelance walkers actually lose:
- 2 to 4 percent in payment-processing fees if you accept card via a mobile reader.
- Roughly 6 percent in unpaid or late bookings across a year for most freelancers we speak with.
- Untracked time chasing bookings, sending invoices, and negotiating payment: two to five hours a week.
The 5 percent platform fee is typically the cheapest cost line, and it replaces three separate expenses.
Rates do not need to change. Charge your existing clients the same rate you have been charging them. New platform bookings can come in at market rate for your city, which is often higher than what your longest-standing clients pay.
Moving your existing clients over
The natural instinct is to keep long-time clients off-platform to save the fee. That is a mistake for three reasons.
- You lose the insurance, GPS tracking, and enforced cancellation policy for exactly the clients you have the deepest exposure to.
- You are the single point of failure. If you are off sick for two weeks, nobody covers your best clients. Platform-based providers can arrange verified backup.
- Owners actually like it. Live GPS trails, in-app messaging, one place to see the history, and a receipt for tax time — most owners are relieved when you move them.
Script for the conversation: "I am moving all my walks onto OnlyPaw for the insurance and live-GPS side of things. You will see the same walks, same rates, same me, and get better tracking and receipts. Nothing else changes."
Nine out of ten clients migrate without pushback. The one who pushes back is usually the one you should have raised rates on two years ago.
Verification is not the same as vetting your clients
New platform pros often assume verification is a hoop for the platform's benefit. It is also protection for you.
On OnlyPaw, verification takes 24 to 48 hours and asks for:
- Government ID (passport or driving licence).
- A live selfie matched to your ID.
- Service-specific documents. Driving licence for pet taxi, home photos for boarding, insurance certificate if you have one.
- A signed provider agreement.
Once verified you can accept bookings from any verified customer. That verified-to-verified relationship is what gives you a paper trail if something goes wrong. Cash freelancers with no verification chain are the ones who end up in he-said-she-said disputes.
What changes for your taxes
Whether you like it or not, platform income is reported income. In the U.S., annual gross payments over the reporting threshold trigger a 1099-K from the platform. In the UK, HMRC now receives platform income reports directly under the OECD digital platform reporting rules.
This is a good thing, not a bad thing.
- Your income becomes provable, which matters for mortgage applications, visa applications, and rental credit checks.
- You can claim expenses cleanly against a paper income.
- You stop worrying about a tax bill you cannot document.
Cash-only walkers often owe more tax than platform walkers because they cannot document deductions. Set aside 25 to 30 percent of every payout and let your accountant do their job.
The rare cases where freelance still wins
Being honest, platform is not always the answer.
- If 100 percent of your work is one family who employs you 30 hours a week, you may be an employee, not a self-employed walker. That is a different conversation with HMRC or the IRS.
- If you run a large commercial kennel with staff, you need business software, not a marketplace.
- If you only walk your neighbour's dog on Saturdays for pocket money, do not overthink it.
Everyone else — including nearly every part-time and full-time independent walker we talk to — is better off on a platform.
A migration week that actually works
For most established freelance walkers, the smooth migration looks like this:
- Monday: create your OnlyPaw provider profile. Upload ID, selfie, insurance certificate.
- Tuesday: while verification runs, take 45 minutes to write your bio, upload six photos of you with real dogs, and set your rates.
- Wednesday-Thursday: verification clears. Send a short message to your top 10 clients explaining the move and asking them to book you through OnlyPaw next week.
- Friday: draft cancellation policy, service area, and availability windows.
- Following Monday: first payout window opens. Any bookings you complete before Sunday night are paid out this Monday.
I would not migrate more than 10 clients the first week. Handle the first cohort's inevitable "how do I use this" questions, iron out your profile, then bring the next 10 across.
