Local rules to check in the United Kingdom
OnlyPaw verifies your identity, service documents and knowledge test. Separately, paid pet care in the United Kingdom may involve local registrations or permits such as:
- UK photo ID (Passport, Driving Licence, or BRP)
- Right-to-work check (British / EU Settled / valid visa)
- Basic DBS check (Enhanced DBS if working with children present)
- UTR from HMRC for self-assessment (self-employed)
- Home boarding: local authority Animal Activities Licence (AAL) under DEFRA 2018 regulations
You'll be self-employed for tax purposes and must register for Self Assessment with HMRC if earnings exceed £1,000/year. Home boarding requires an AAL from your local council under The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018.
These are general pointers, not legal advice — rules change, so confirm them with the relevant authorities before you start.
